Gillette Products Update: The Verdict

I blogged about Gillette's new grooming products here. Now that I've tried the products I got to say that basically, they are Procter and Gamble shampoos and body washes with a Gillette aftershave scent.
I think the opening mechanism was designed by a woman, since it requires to read the instructions on a little label, something that no man with some self-respect left would do. After I trashed the label I wondered how come I had no idea how to open them. After you get past this they're quite nice though.

Gillete and Gaming

Nothing seems to escape Gillette when it comes to advertising. They have come up with a razor just for gamers, or just a regular Fusion with the word gamers slapped onto the packaging, but you can't blame them for trying. Read the gamer's perspective at Loot Ninja.

Old is the new "new"... and green too

Well, we've heard about this before... but I still don't get tired of hearing it. After so much innovation, the old methods still come up on top. Check out this article about shave waste for more reasons why you should put that plastic razor on permanent vacation and give a double-edge razor or even a straight razor a try.

Why we love Baxter

Baxter of California hasn't been around as long as the staples of classic shaving (DR Harris, Geo F Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street), but still it has a nice little history associated with it, starting in 1965.  I have blogged briefly about them before, but now I found a little nugget of history I found worthwhile at The Dieline. The force behind their latest redesign is no other than owner J.P. Mastey; but this is no newbie who just came and bought the company out of fancy. It is almost like a father passing down a business to his son. Here is a bit from the original:

32 year old J.P. Mastey has only been President of Baxter of California for six years, but his history with the company spans his entire life. Growing up in Los Angles, his father’s company was located in the same building as Baxter. As a kid J.P. would hang out in the Baxter offices, play with Baxter Finley’s dog and poke around the lotions and potions that made Baxter a household name starting in 1965.

Even when J.P. began working in the international men’s fashion market, he still kept in touch with Baxter and developed an appreciation of the products while traveling globally.

When Baxter Finley was finally ready to pass the baton, he knew exactly who to call to take over the reigns. Exhausted from constantly pushing other people’s brands, J.P. was more than happy to take over a line that he already knew like the back of his hand to call his own. After analyzing the market for several years, he decided the time was right for Baxter to have a re-birth with new packaging, products and marketing. Since launching in January 2007 the line has received numerous consumer and packaging design awards, validating the effort and strategy put into the re-launch."

I have gained more respect for the company after reading this. It is great to see new people getting into this business out of true dedication.

And to celebrate it we're expanding our Baxter line to include 10 new products. It's not a joke we love Baxter.

New Baxter products at Fendrihan include:

Vintage Blade Eye Candy

Check out this set of double-edge vintage blades at flickr. Sliced alligators, eyes, and what looks to me like a riot downtown... definitely lots of interesting graphics.

Peruvian shaving magic... not for the faint of heart

Hilarious article on Mail Online about the perils of shaving with esoteric Peruvian concoctions, even this one that GQ counts among their top 10 products of the year. It's called Maca root and from the article I'm not quite sure if anyone who is trying it is slightly interested in its shaving benefits. The author has quite a field day trying to use it with a cartridge razor... still I wonder how it'd do with a double edge. I'm not saying I need every benefit that it's got to offer, but it might make a nice winter shaving cream...
Also had a laugh with the comments; something like "I don't have any hair to shave, but don't you have this in a body lotion kind of a deal?"

Shave more for less

Here is an interesting article from First Coast News, with a tip from The Gentlemens Refinery's Perry Gastis on how to bring down the price of your shave. It is all well and I recommend it to five-blade shavers out there, but this will (1) not save you that much and (2) not improve your shave either. It still doesn't make sense to me that using lukewarm water and spending some extra money on some expensive jojoba oil are going to bring a $3.49 cartridge down to the 15 cents a double-edge blade costs. But if you like your five blades...
